Our Food Rules

One of my 2014 goals is to devote more attention and awareness to our health. I have a list of general “food rules” I’ve followed for years, but it’s time to update and improve this list which I’ll be doing throughout the year through my Health & Wellness series in case you’d like to follow along with me.

Here’s what we’ve got so far:

– Buy organic for all dairy (milk, cheese, sour cream, butter, etc)
– Buy organic for the “dirty dozen” (fruits and veggies that rate highest for pesticides, like apples)*
– Buy organic greens, like lettuce and arugula
– Buy organic chicken, pork, and grass-fed beef and ground meats
– Buy seafood using the seafoodwatch.org guidelines
– Serve at least one vegetarian dinner/week
– Experiment with vegan meal options
– Swap ground beef for lean, ground turkey or chicken
– Drink 2-3 cups daily of black, Oolong and Matcha green teas (among others)
– Limit consumption of animal products to 2-3/week
– Avoid processed foods by not buying foods that come in a box, bag, or package (think: Ore0s, potato chips, granola bars)
– Avoid soda
– Throw out the microwave (here’s why)
