Two sisters and a mini arcade claw machine. Could they be any happier? Doubtful. Will this blissful, utopian, magnanimous sharing of birthday gifts last beyond the weekend? Circle back later this week for a full report. 🤣 Anyways. I’ve been thinking a lot about siblings recently. When I learned I was having a second girl, I was absolutely thrilled. Sisters!! Just like my younger sister Vicky, (and later, Skylar), and I. Toss in my younger brother Kevin and now it’s really a party. šŸŽ‰ Growing up as one of four, it wasn’t even a question that a bigger family was what I’d want one day. Three kids, at least. Don’t so many of us want what we had? The sharper edges smoothed. Sure, I desperately wanted to NOT share a room with a sister who regularly caught me wearing her clothes at school and vice versa, screaming and threatening to murder me for ā€œdebutingā€ her new sweater or jeans. But can I imagine my life any differently, sans siblings? Certainly not. A thought occurred to me recently though that has me reeling. The dynamics of a sibling group are unique and special, but I don’t think I ever fully recognized or appreciated that as the *mother,* I won’t ever be a part of that *sibling* dynamic I so wanted for my own kids. As parents, we can dream of a full, animated breakfast table on Christmas morning or van doors sliding open and kids tumbling out, happily shouting and laughing, but that very special, very longed for dynamic is a party you’re not exactly a *part* of, much as you had a hand in the very development of said group. It was a bit of a bittersweet moment when this dawned on me, perhaps as I watch the two girls, heads together, collaborating on their next move with the claw.
My boys! 🄰 Since I have been in physical therapy for my shoulder, (labrum tear) Brian has been very sweetly dropping me off with the boys at the gym, carrying them the whole trek in. Thinking on it, this is probably how I hurt myself in the first place. Anyways, they absolutely love the babysitter there, Judy, and the improvement I’ve seen in their interactions with each other as well as their independent play has improved so much since we returned to going again. It was a long, rough winter not being able to take advantage of this, let me tell you! But the germs and colds that flowed through the play center… you have to choose your battles. šŸ™ƒ We spent a lot of this winter sick, so here’s hoping our immune systems are all boosted.
There’s a lot going on here, like most days. But today is especially special and the girls were so sweet celebrating their brothers. This is a crazy, messy and wild ride but I’m so glad these are the kiddos on it with us.
Happy 2nd Birthday boys! We shook things up and took them out for breakfast at The Friendly Toast this morning and it was such a fun experience. Well, as fun as eating in a restaurant with two toddlers can be, but it was a nice change to be able to focus on just them while the girls were at school. We’re taking them to Sesame Place to really celebrate big once the weather warms up a bit so we just did a small placeholder celebration earlier today. More sappy posts to come tomorrow but for now, just breathing a sigh of relief that we made it it TWO with TWO. šŸ€šŸ€
