A lot of people might be surprised to learn that I was a vegetarian until I was about 9 years old. I mention this only because my sister Vicky, was not (but is now — not to confuse things). Although I’m older, she’s taller which is noticeable in a family not exceptionally “vertically endowed” if you know what I mean!
This came to mind as I read an article online at Prevention Magazine titled The Scary Link Between Meat and Cancer. To summarize, a study found a link between consumption of animal products and increased cancer rates. I know, I know. At this point this seems like old news. “Just eat organic” you might be thinking, but no. The study found that the insulin-like growth factor 1, or IGF-1, is found in ALL meat products (including organics) and can trigger cancer by causing us to grow — and tumors.
I’d always assumed my sister was taller because she slept so much more than I did growing up, but maybe it had to do with out diets too. Regardless, after reading these findings I’m happy to have reduced our meat consumption over the last year. It definitely makes it a little easier to make vegetarian choices day after day when all I’m craving is a steak! Just one more step on the path to a healthier 2014.
